"Energy Efficiency Project in Progress" sign

To date, about twenty buildings have been converted to the new lighting system with positive feedback from building occupants. As a result of this project, campus energy use will be reduced by more than 3 million kilowatt hours at a cost savings of more than $300,000 annually. Deferred maintenance and energy efficiency bonds funded and made this project a reality.

Lighting Efficiency Retrofit

In 2005, UCI launched the most extensive lighting retrofit project in university history. The project removes existing inefficient ballast and lamps in 48 campus buildings and replaces them with new energy efficient programmed rapid start electronic ballast and high performance T8 lamps.

The new lighting system produces a higher quality light and delivers ten percent higher light output at an average twenty-five percent energy savings. In addition to the lighting retrofit, occupancy sensors will be installed to automatically turn lights off during unoccupied periods.
