landscape and groundsThe UCI campus encompasses about 1,475 acres, in the center of which is Aldrich Park, a 19-acre botanical garden named for UCI's first chancellor, Dan Aldrich Jr. The park has more than 11,000 trees and shrubs. Over the years it has been the site of commencement ceremonies, inaugurations, weddings, concerts and picnics. The annual Wayzgoose Medieval Faire is held in the park in conjunction with UCI's annual open house, Celebrate UCI. Including the park, Facilities Management maintains close to 24,000 trees, countless shrubs and plants, acres of grass, tens of thousands of sprinkler heads, and miles and miles of irrigation pipe. Add to that 12 miles of roads to sweep, 60 parking lots and 4 parking structures to keep clean and lit, miles of bike paths and walkways, numerous plazas, loading docks, bike racks, bollards, flagpoles and stairs, and you will begin to understand the immense scale of our landscape and grounds operation. It makes our day to hear the campus community and our visitors comment on our beautiful campus and how "great the place looks".
