This event walked the talk and demonstrated how a little planning before can result in a 100% zero waste event. Compost bins were used in place of trash bins, all food choices were locally sourced and served on reusable plates and extra food was donated. This type of learning event allows the UCI community to come together and share in its legacy as an eco-friendly campus.
UCI's Facilities Management Sustainability Team hosted the 2018 Zero Waste Event Planners Training, which was funded by a UCOP grant. 52 of the UCI event planners came together to participate and see first-hand how small changes to planning an event can make a big difference environmentally. 5 campus guest speakers representing the FM Sustainability Team, UCI's Hospitality and Dining, FRESH Basic Needs hub, and the head of the Events Council shared new ideas and focused on sustainable purchasing options, event waste reduction techniques, zero-waste meal planning, and greener options for decorations.
